Zigzag on Stairs

At the hostel that I stayed at there was a stair to go to the second floor. But with the sodium lights it made for a very weird sight.

HK Skyline @ night

The Hong Kong Art Museum (on the Kowloon side of the harbor) has a great view of the Hong Kong light show. The building with the white "latticework" is the Bank of China building.

A picnic bench in the mist

The Mt. Davis youth hostel in Hong Kong had an amazing view behind the self-serve kitchen of Sulfur Bay and (on the right) Kowloon.

Looking out on Shenzen

Posted by Picasa
The view from the hotel in Shenzen was obscured by the high level of smog and pollution.

Drop Water Cooling

Drop water cooling was really popular in China, as it both fuel-efficient and energy-efficient in general, for cooling air. You can see that the interior is black with mold from the constant exposure to both water and air. This plant was in Shenzen in mainland China.

The 13th floor

Many people in the west get freaked out about the '13th floor', not so in the East. This is a picture of the lift controls, inside of the Prudential Hotel, Hong Kong.

Ways of getting to China...

Ways to get from Hong Kong to beautiful Shenzen China. (Snicker..)

Drive through the border; stop once to go through Chinese customs, arrive 60 minutes later at destination

Go on train to border move through border and through customs, arrive in about 1.5 hrs after getting picked up at Chinese border.

decide to go on bus. try to find the bus stop and fail. find a new bus line that 'gets us close' to where we need to go in china. get to border. go through border, then get on a new bus. go ride to the china border control. go through customs without too much hassle. wait for bus to come. Realize that bus is not coming, talk with bus company some more and realize that people get on 'new buses' since the drivers keep going w/o waiting for you. keep waiting and collecting unfortunates which have the same problem. At this point call the drivers which we know and get them at the destination which we expect to get to. Put all annoyed people on a new bus. Start driving around in Shenzen and find out that the 'driver' does not actually know the way, and that at various points he needs to stop, ask directions, fill up the bus's diesel tank, and generally makes a poor showing for the company. Get to the destination which we wanted to get to after 2 hours. The drivers have been waiting for 2 hours, and are cranky. Drive to final destination, at speeds well over the speed limit, getting there in 20 minutes. Total trip time; 5.5 hours

I pick the top two over the last option. However the last option was somewhat interesting, and required some intestinal fortitude. Other people might disagree.

Sorry for the double post but my language was in Chinese and I hit publish instead of save as draft. This might be posted again later.

Lamma Island - The yellow house

Posted by Picasa
The color of this house made it really stick out from the forest that was practically overgrowing it. The houses on this island, tended to be white with occasional splotches of color, so this yellow house was fairly unusual.

Lamma Island Backside

Some of my coworkers and I had a day-trip to Lamma Island, a nearby outlying island known for it's ex-pat population and picturesque scenery. It has steep hiking, beautiful beaches, and a giant power plant. This image was taken near the ferry and market place on the backside of the island.

Leaving for HKIA

This view of the Boeing 777's engine from the gate in Newark waiting to get on the Continental flight to Hong Kong International Airport was the start of the international part of my trip.
